Who wants to be a content creator? I’m sure many people want to be a content creator. Even an elementary school child when asked by President Jokowi answered that he wanted to become a Youtuber.
Whatever type of platform, Instagram, Youtube, Blog, Tiktok, Facebook or others, as long as we create content on the platform, we deserve to be called a content creator. Likewise, this writing on LinkedIn is also part of the result of a content creator process.
In short, content creators are people who produce content in various formats. In communication, this content creator can also be referred to as a communicator. He is a person who communicates certain messages to the audience and distributes them through communication channels.
Considering the rapid acceleration of communication and information technology, I was feeling pessimistic, especially with the increasing number of content containing hoaxes, hate speech, mutual suspicion and accusations, and even content that is very frontal offensive. In addition, there are many mainstream media outlets that are playing with content to attract followers, likes and click bait. The ironies are that many of them have compromised their idealism as mainstream media.
However, my pessimism was answered on Friday (26/5). At that time, I had the opportunity to discuss with Mr Taufik, an automotive blogger. Since 2008, he has started writing on his personal blog channel, http://www.tmcblog.com.
We had a great chat with more than 800 viewers on the meeting room. We explored his spirit as a content creator who still holds on to his principles. I think he is worth to be used as a benchmark, especially in terms of idealism.
For those of you who don’t know Mr Taufik, he is a two-wheeled automotive blogger, official Moto GP speaker at Trans 7 and also a vlogger. Since 2008, he has regularly shared his ideas and knowledge about automotive on his blog page.
Here are some positive things that we can take as lessons to become a content creator, in general we are all content creators in our communication channels.
1. Something good must start from good
If we want good results, start with good. Write or create good content. Use good and legitimate references. Believe me, something that starts well will produce something good too.
2. Be useful
The best human being is the one who is beneficial to others, right? Now it’s time to check if the content you produce and share is beneficial to others? If yes, keep going. If it doesn’t feel useful, you should rethink it.
3. Have Idealism
Idealism is like a compass for a ship sailing in the ocean. No matter how strong the wind, waves, and storms are, the ship will still be able to survive in reaching its destination. In terms of content production, you need to have a compass that will guide you and keep you consistent. The scorn, mockery or lack of appreciation from the audience will not affect your enthusiasm. So have that idealism.
Three main things above, I have learnt that being a communicator is not easy. Especially for communicators who have a high endurance and it’s all shown with relentless consistency. There are also technical things to consider such as the selection of content topics that are specific and focused, the choice of platform strategy, and the quality of the content itself.
Hope this is useful. Thank you.
